We want to add a kitten to our household. We have ferral cat who spends time in doors. What can we do?

Shorty is our mostly ferral cat who's in and out of the house. He'll let us pet him if we're sitting on the couch, but is basically very unsure of us otherwise. We just lost his pal, Blacky, who disappeared. Blacky was an indoor/outdoor cat who brought us Shorty when he was a kitten. Shorty's never gotten comfortable. Blacky was the boss. Wondering how we might introduce a kitten (who will be strictly an indoor cat)into the household.
