First, stop all table food and any treats. Second, don't leave out any food. Third, put your cats on a feeding schedule. I feed my cats in the morning and then around 4:00 p.m. I sometimes give them a before bedtime snack of dry food (tablespoon only). This seems to be working out fine. They do seem to beg at times, but I try to ignore it. You could try feeding them a high protein diet (I feed Wellness to my cats) because it fills them up, unlike the cheaper foods. You certainly don't want your cats to get too fat because it could cause health problems later (diabetes, etc.). Try this schedule and see what happens. I'm sure just eliminating table food, treats and free-feeding will help them drop a little weight. Also, incorporate some "play time" into your schedule. Even if it is ten minutes a day. My cat likes to be chased around the house. Keep them mentally alert (a window perch is good) so that they stay awake longer throughout the day and that will also shed pounds.

Izadore (Izzie)

Guest gives excellent advice. I'd also like to caution you not to leave out "people food" as well, including dishes in the sink or on the table. Izzie will climb into the sink and "prewash" my dishes if I don't get them in the dishwasher fast enough. Like with people, exercise is very important to help burn off those calories and keep them from getting bored. Playtimes are invaluable, and fun, too!

Nathanial Patrick

One thing that has worked for me and my fur-family is buying a reduced-calorie food. With this, they'll be able to eat the same amount of food but won't be taking in as many calories.

Also, just know that this is NOT a dumb question. I have a vet that has been practicing for 35 years. He told me that my cat had to loose weight. I asked him how, and he replied "I have no idea at all." If the vets don't even know the answer, don't feel bad that you don't know either.

The previous answers have been EXCELLENT. I would start with the low-calorie food, and then if that doesn't solve the issue, you could try any of the great solutions above.

Twinkle

I think all of these answers are wonderful. I feed Twinkle Evo Weight Management food. As mentioned in a previous answer, light or weight management food will certainly help. Also when playing with your cat, try toys that will cause her to run around & burn calories such as a laser pointer. Most cats love them. If you don't want to get one, simply try making her chase the flaslight beam. Most cats will chase that too & yes stop the people food anyway. Good luck!
