We occupy two apartments on top of eachother. And we have one new kitten!

When the tenant below us moved out, our landlord allowed us to rent the apartment below for more space. I work from home now down there and we sleep down there. But upstairs we keep our kitchen, dining room, living room, movie watching hanging out area. It is also the nicer apartment with our landlord's beautiful elegant victorian curtains (wouldn't want those scratched!). So we're having a great time with our new kitten in the downstairs, but eventually we'd like to introduce her to upstairs. The first issue is that the apartments only connect by common stairway, which is shared with other tenants, so i'm thinking it might be a good idea to use the carrier box to transport the kitten upstairs when it's time. Other issue, is when do we introduce the other part of our home? Should it be sooner than later? We're planning on getting a scratching post and another kitty litter upstairs as well. Thanks!

There is no reason why you shouldn't treat this arrangement the same way that someone would treat a colonial or split level home. Make sure that there are litter boxes with the same litter on each floor. Supervise kitty when she is introduced to the upper level to make sure she doesn't get into trouble. Remove plants and chewable cords. You can transport her via carrier if you want, but if she is attached to you, she will probably follow you from one apartment to another. Just make sure that when she is on this staircase there is no opportunity to bolt outdoors and make sure that the other tennants are on-board with a "community" kitten. She will probably make up her mind sooner or later that she prefers one level over another, so transporting might not be such an issue.
