We just got a new cat. Our first. Do we leave the light on in his room when we go to sleep or is he okay in the dark??

Congratulations on the new addition!
Assuming he doesn't have any problems with his eyesight, cats have relatively good night vision and are able to find their way around familiar places in the dark. In my opinion, you should make sure he has full light during the day while he gets used to his room, but don't leave the full bright room light on at night. A source of soft, ambient light at bedtime would be ideal, such as a nightlight or room light on a dimmer, until he gets used to your home and the sounds and routines.

Ralphie and Randy are right! Your kitten doesn’t need lights during the night. In fact, a darker room at night will help your kitten to sleep or be less active at night (not all night, he is a cat).
Congratulations!!! You will love to have a kitten as your pet. Catster has lots of information related to kitten, it helped me a lot…
