By the age of 8 weeks, the kittens should be fully weaned. Some spay/neuter clinics will alter a cat at that age. Studies have found that kittens altered this young, as long as they meet the weight requirements which can differ from clinic to clinic, suffer no ill effects from the surgery. And, as some cats reach sexual maturity by 4 months of age, early altering isn't such a bad idea. The mother should be spayed as soon as possible as she could come into heat again soon. I would caution you to seek the help of a reputable shelter or rescue when trapping these cats to bring them to the clinic. A feral cat is a wild animal and as such is unpredictable. Even an 8 wk. old kitten could cause you injuries when you try to trap them, and if the mother is truly feral, you could wind up needing medical attention. Having said that, I congratulate you on doing the right thing with these cats. The world needs more people like you.
