Thinking about adopting a kitten, but we have a (hyper and excitable) dog already. How will they get along/be safe?
my family already has a small dog, about 4 years old. He is always hyper, and very excitable, especially around people. We really want a cat in the family, and our friend just so happened to have a litter of kittens they are giving away, so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity. The only thing holding us back from kitten adoption is whether or not the animals will get along, or be safe around each other. We want a harmonious household, without cats scratching dogs/dogs chasing cats. Is there any way this will be possible? If so, please let me know so we can carry this out!

I have 3 cats and 2 dogs. 1 of my dogs, a Springer, tolerates cats and they LOVE her. The other dog, a rescue shepherd/husky mix, chases and on occasion will try to bite the cats. For this reason, I could never have a kitten. Kittens are very playful little creatures. If your dog is not obedient and is high-strung, you'll have to constantly supervise his interactions with the kitten. Be aware that even kittens, when cornered and threatened, will hiss, claw and defend themselves. This may be all it takes for doggie to think twice before harrassing the kitten. Make sure the kitten knows where it can run to hide from the dog if necessary. When you bring the kitten home, take the dog for a walk and let the cat explore your home to find these places. Keep the dog on a leash during the 1st meetings. Dogs and cats are not natural enemies and with close supervision, advice from your vet and a positive attitude, it CAN be done and they can enventually tolerate each other if not be BFFs.
