I had a ragdoll cat for years. He had a very long thick coat. His fur would get tangled and dirty no matter how much i combed and bathed him. What I ended up doing was taking him to Petsmart and having him trimmed. He didn't like it at first but when he came home and got lots of compliments he started struting proudly around the house. In the end he loved it and so did I. I don't know if that's the answer you were looking for but just trying to help.
