Peeing on kitchen counters?

My four year old, neutered male has been peeing on our kitchen counters. I'm pretty sure he is not urine marking. Could this be a sign of a health problem or do you think he just wants to get my attention for some reason?

Yes, it could. When a cat urine marks, you will see more of a spray pattern than a puddle and the mark would probably be on the backsplash behind your counter than directly on it as they usually back up, raise their tail and let go. You first order of business is to take him to the vet's for a urine sample culture to make sure he doesn't have a medical issue. Then discuss with your vet what's been going on in your life and his that may have caused him to suddenly stop being able to get to the litter box.
