Our female calico is always looking up toward the ceiling. Have you heard of this in other cats?

"Calico" is a color pattern, not a breed. Some people ascribe certain behaviors to certain colors, but there doesn't seem to be any real scientific data to back this up. Maybe you have rats in your ceiling? Maybe your kitty sees mosquitoes or flies flying around? If she demonstrates other unusual patterns of movement, you might want to get a vet check for any neurological problems.

You don't indicate how old your cat is, but if she is older (12 years or so), it may be an indication of dementia. Yes, cats get old just like people and display the same behaviors as humans do. If she is a younger cat, you may want to get her checked out as it could also be a sign of a neurological problem (such as a seizure coming on). My cat used to have seizures (she has since passed) and would have a blank look or stare before she had a seizure. She would then go into convulsions and wet herself. This happened at least once a month since age five years and the vets never knew what caused it. They just said they were idiopathic seizures (meaning of unknown origin). Regardless of kitty's age, you probaby should still get her checked out. Hope kitty is okay!

Izadore (Izzie)

Izzie, my Maine Coon mix, also does this. He'll sit on my lap and stare up at the top of the curtain valance in the family room. It kind of creeps me out and I'm afraid to turn around and look sometimes! There's usually a good reason if, as Guest says, you don't think she has dementia. Most of us have what we call "no-see-ums" in our house, those little gnats and flies that are present even in the winter. But, our cats CAN see them. Also, it's possible your house may be creaking or making noise and it disturbs your kitty. If she spends hours just staring, I'd definitely have her checked out. If she starts hissing and spitting when she's staring, I'd call "Ghost Hunters" . ;-)

Dahlia

She could be seeing reflections of light moving across the ceiling. My kitties go nuts for those tiny little movements :)

You have animals, mice, squirrels, etc. A cat can hear at 6.5 times what humans can hear. She/He is hearing scurrying rodents most likely.
