I have a 2 yrold cat and just adopted a 6 yrold cat. The 6yrold got along with/ignored other cats in the shelter. She is very shy after being neglected/abused by previous owners for her whole life. Declawed. Semi-feral tendencies (she's been w/me for 4 weeks and I have yet to pick her up because she gets scared and runs if I so much as move a hand too quickly) but very sweet. 2yrold is used to being spoiled, only cat, hyper. She is curious to sniff and meet the 6yrold, but the 6yrold hides whenever the 2yr old is around, making it impossible for me to get them near each other. 6yrold has been in isolation in bedroom and I can't get her to go near the door to sniff/play paw games with the 2yrold. The 2yrold is very frustrated being separated from me at night and is tearing up the carpet near my bedroom door. I cannot afford baby gates or screen doors as some suggest to socialize them through the door. Also can't do the washcloth trick as the 6yrold won't let me touch her with one. Help?

How about putting the 2 year old in a carrier and letting the new kitty explore? Supervised of course - just for 20 minute sessions every day. If the new kitty feels so skittish a 2 year old running around is going to amplify that feeling. Maybe if the new kitty had a chance to explore without the 2 year old roaming around she may be inclined to settle in. I would keep the environment as still and quiet as possible and see if she starts to feel brave enough to venture out. And during these sessions don’t seek her out necessarily – just get down on her level and let her come to you. She isn't going to settle in if she is too frightened to explore - I think getting used to the 2 year old is secondary right now. First let her feel secure in her new home - then meet the family. Good luck and let me know how it works out!

I just adopted a cat who is social and friendly, but in my house, it's Izzie who was terrified of this little cat who weights 1/2 as much as him! To be truthful, I've just let them work it out themselves. It would be worse if the new cat was aggressive and attack-prone. If she just hides, then it may take a long while for her to acclimate to her new home and get comfortable with everyone in it. Leave the door open, and let the 2 yr. old come in when you're in bed, even if the other one is in there. Chances are she'll flee and hide someplace else in the house overnight. After a while, begin playing with the 2 yr. old with feather toys, balls, etc. The 6 year old may just be curious enough to want to join in. Everyone here has the run of the house and my new one, Lizzie, is really beginning to come around. Good luck!
