My Vet says my cat has Calicivirus. She has bad breath and red gums ans Sneezes too.
I took my cat to the vet.She says Kally has calicivirus, like a kitty herpes. Red gums and bad breath. She sneezes too. I brush and massage her gums daily and give her Felines Greenies. She's eating Eagles Holistic select canned food. Dry food is Duck/Oatmeal for her feline acne too. No plastic dishes at all. I'm mostly concerned about her Calicivirus. Could I please have some good answers. thank you very much Elizabeth & Kally Kat (: PS I adopted her from a Humane society 3 months ago and they said all her shots are up to date!

Please recheck Kally's shot records for a vaccination series called FVRCP. Kittens and cats should have their first FVRCP vaccination between 6-12 weeks of age, and the second vaccination in the series about 3-4 weeks later. Also, calicivirus and feline herpes are two different things. Calicivirus is a respiratory disease; herpes is not. This is a link to an article on my own vet's website (he is an advisor to CatChannel.com and Cat Fancy and has been on Martha Stewart) www.manhattancats.com/Articles/viral_upper_respiratory_infections.htm
You sound like you take EXCELLENT care of your Kally kitty! Be sure to keep her on any meds your vet has prescribed (like an antibiotic, in case of secondary infection) and limit your exposure to all other cats (because about 60% carry calici!) until Kally can build up her immunity. Best wishes!

I haven't heard of symptoms like those for calicivirus, but you should have your vet check her for Bartonella, it is a blood test. My kitty was a rescue also I started noticing his teeth getting worse and worse. It started with the bad breath and then they get dirty, start bleeding but I also started noticing that it seemed painful to eat dry food so my vet had spoke with a dental specialist. He recommended the test because he has seen this in a lot of cats because they are now thinking it is transmitted by flees. But we use antibiotics every so often and it seems to helps him, he has had to have some teeth pulled from this. So this may be something you might want to talk to your vet or even if you have a specialist in your area to speak with him.
