my cat's rt eye looks irratated, red all around his eye. signs of? remedy to help

my kitty JD had some redness, watering and eventually loss of fur on inner eyes/inner ducts. i decided to use a Q-Tip, with fresh cold water on it every day, usually twice a day and whipped it clean. after about 10 days it was gone and clean. i did however see that petsmart sells a cleaning spray for around their eyes, it was about 11$ for a small bottle if the water doesn't work.
