First you need to have Midnight checked for a urinary tract infection, or UTI, or other health concerns. The only symptom of this is peeing outside the box. It must be diagnosed and treated by a vet. It won't go away by itself. If he checks out alright, then make sure you clean up where he pees with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution, available at PetsMart to erase his odor from the area where he peed. Make sure his litter is clean and fresh and his box is in a private area. If he's not neutered, you need to have that done as he may be marking by spraying. When you're at the vet, mention that he's started peeing on the rug. Your vet can give you more advice.
