A swollen vagina is not the only sign of a cat in heat and it can be a sign of an infection, too. Females who are looking to mate will become very vocal, meowing loud and long. They will become more affectionate, rubbing up against things. She will try to bolt outside at any time and if she does get out, there's a 99% chance she will become pregnant. She will go into heat every few weeks until she is spayed or mates and becomes pregnant. If you suspect your female is in heat, she needs to be spayed.
