My cat is 5yrs old and has recently began urinating and pooping outside of his litter box, he has never done before.

Whenever there is a sudden change in behavior, we ALWAYS urge owners to at least call their vets. Your kitty may have issues with elimination that cause him some pain when he's in the box such as a urinary tract infection. In his mind, the box is causing the pain, so he finds somewhere else. Make sure his box is in a private place. Cats feel vulnerable while doing their business and don't like an audience. If you've recently moved it, you might want to put it back where it was. Make sure he has the same litter he's always used and that it's scooped daily and changed out weekly. Research your recent life to make sure nothing has happened (such as a new pet or someone in the house) that has weirded him out. Not using the box is one of the ways our cats tell us they aren't happy with a situation in their lives. But do at least call your vet and share with them what he's doing. Most vets will give advice over the phone for free.
