My cat has a little opening beside his bum hole, and when you gently squeeze or put pressure on it brown puss comes out.

And I'll bet the puss smells to high Heaven, right? Cats (and dogs) have two glands or sacs on either side of their anus at about the 5 and 7 o'clock position. When the cat poops, the hard poop presses on the glands and they empty out, leaving the scent on the poop. It's a marking thing to let other animals know Fluffy's been there. Cats have had these glands for thousands of years, since there've been cats. These days, we feed our cats a lot of canned or "wet" food that makes for softer poop. The glands don't express or empty out and they can become infected. You may notice your cat scooting his butt on the floor. When the glands become infected, it's like when humans have hemmorhoids. Not fun. You can express these glands yourself, but it's stinky, messy and severely annoys the cat. And, if he does have an infection, he'll need antibiotcs prescribed by a vet. If he seems uncomfortable back there, take him into his doc.
