If he's losing weight he should be seen by a vet. 9 is early old age for cats, and as they get older they are much more at risk for serious conditions that can make them lose weight like hyperthyroidism or chronic renal failure, which can be cured or well-treated and managed if caught early. Taking him in now could be the difference between several more years of healthy life or a few months of dramatic downward spiral and an early death.

This is perfectly natural. As cats age, they become less active, so use less energy and require fewer calories. As he gets older, gradually change him to a Senior pet food, which contains the vitamins and minerals an older cat needs without so much of the energy. A lesser portion might also be good. The best way to feed your cat is by leaving a bowl of dry food out for him to eat whenever he feels like, that way you won't over- or under-feed him. Unless, of course, he's like me, a ravenous pig and will eat the food within five seconds of your putting it out.
