You do need to take him to his vet to make sure there are no health issues involved. Make sure he has plenty of litter boxes around the house, all kept scrupulously clean, so he always has one nearby. He may be overly sensitive to the loss of your dog and also the appearance and then disappearance of Max. When you take him to the vet, ask for advice on how to treat your cat, socialize him and let him know that it's OK. He's probably lonely since you're gone so much, so spend as much time as you can when you are home with him. Your suitcases may have strange scents that he doesn't like and he's marking them with his own scent.
