You should take them to the vet to determine exactly what kind of worms they have and in order to get a more effective medicine. The vet can answer your questions about litter.

Leila is right. You need to take a stool sample to your vet to determine what kind of worms your cats have and get the proper medicine. OTC wormers work about as well as OTC flea medications and the vet has more powerful remedies that work better. You'll need to take follow-up stool samples to the vet in a week to make sure there are no new eggs and the "old" eggs and worms are gone. When my cats had worms, I changed litter once a day, put it in a plastic bag, scoured the litter boxes then scoured my hands and put fresh litter in. If you have access to plastic gloves, I'd use those when you handle the litter.

Take them to the vet and determine what kind of worms they have. They can give them a dewormer that's much more effective and it's not pricey at all. Oscar had worms when we brought him home. He had two treatments and he actually liked the medicine. The vet tech calls it the "kitty cat milkshake."
