Kitten has started eating different branded adult cat's food and I think it's making her sick

Hi again...

Ollie (5-6 wk old kitten) started eating my flatmates older cat's food today which is not only adult food, but also a different brand to what Ollie is eating.

I noticed since then her last stool was runny, and she has been farting - is this due to the other food? Is it not safe for her to eat?

It's not possible to feed them in separate places (but could do different times, or even put older cats food up high when he's finished... but then what happens when Ollie can get up there) and I don't really want to switch her food brand, but don't want this to keep happening either - any other suggestions?

Yes, it is most likely the other food that is causing the gas and diarrhea. Not the food itself, but the sudden change in food. This happened when Allie was little and she got into the dog's bowl. My solution was to elevate the dog's bowls so she could not reach them. If Ollie had been eating it all along, the adult food would not hurt her, but it really won't provide the kitten nutrition her growing brain and body need. The easiest solution would be to switch them both to an all life stages food like Innova or Halo, etc. Any switch that you do on purpose should be done gradually by mixing the two for a while to get their bodies used to it. Or else try the different feeding times and keep the other cat's food where she can't get to it while she's a baby. If the diarrhea and gas persist, she should see the vet in case there is something else wrong. Intestinal parasites also cause diarrhea and gas.
