It is my 1st shedding season. My tail has got alot less fluffy. Is this normal for Maine coons? I know we have no fleas
I have 4 maine coons. My 2 that are 16 months old are losing their fluffy tails. My 2 that are 10 months have not. They are indoors and I know they do not have fleas. I did bathe the first 2 with pure care shampoo with oatmeal. Could this be the problem?

Ah, the Maine Coon tail fluffiness problem. Some MCs just have great tails for their entire lives. Some have great tails while young, but the tails get sparser with summer, because of childbirth, or just because of age. MC breeders recommend that you keep the air conditioning on the lowest setting throughout the summer. This helps some cats keep their coats and fluffy tails, but there are other cats who, for some weird genetic reason, are furry, furry, furry, no matter what the season and no matter whether the air conditioner is being used or not. I have three permanent MCs right now, and two of them have definitely lost their erstwhile fluffy tails. Harvey (a show cat) may have been groomed too much. Leila (a queen) may have lost her fluffiness due to hormonal changes--Momcats often do. Leila's kittens all had superb tails, but I'm curious as to whether their tails will become thinner with time. Yes, your cats need the occasional bath, but I've been advised not to overdo it.

Some MCs tails do get to be less fluffy when they are older , compared to when they are kittens . Also the coat can change as they age- in either direction, many don't get their full MC coat until they are at least 2 years old.
What you are likely seeing is the cat "blowing its coat" which is common in adult MCs in the spring and summer. Thats another way of saying heavy shedding!! Maggie and Loki are doing that right now.
