I would not use any Hartz products on your cat. A few years back there were some Hartz flea products on the news which were found to be hazardous to pets. Do yourself and your cat a favor and take kitty to the vet for a proper diagnosis. Take a fresh stool sample with you to be analyzed for worms. Your vet will be able to determine what the problem is and treat your cat accordingly. Best of luck.

There is no way the Hartz gave her tapeworms, to get those she had to either come in contact with infected rodents or been bitten by an infected flea. Now if you were relying on Hartz to protect her from the fleas then it didn't work and that's not surprising. Over the counter flea treatments like Hartz don't do nearly as good of a job at killing fleas as Rx treatments even though they often contain even more harsh chemicals. Many people swear that their pets were poisoned by Hartz products and there are lots of anti-Hartz websites and class action lawsuits against them. That's something to consider, but mostly you should skip the OTC flea treatments because they aren't as effective or closely regulated as the month-long spot treatments your vet can give you and not nearly worth the price savings especially if you have an active infestation.

Personally I am afraid of all the products that kill fleas by making the cat's body toxic to them so the only ones I would ever trust would be the ones you can get at the vet like Frontline or Advantage (which are also available at Petco or Petsmart)and Revolution which is Rx only. Revolution is great because it also protects against heartworm and will kill ear mites and many intestinal parasites as well. Last year Destiny brought fleas in from coming on a plane from her breeder and that is what I chose from the ones my vet suggested. It is hard to say if the Hartz did not work at all or if your cat already had ingested some fleas and developed tapeworm before you even used it but if your budget will allow for the better products, I would avoid the Hartz just for her safety. Just do NOT use anything else on her if you have recently used the Hartz. It needs to be out of her system first.

I've heard bad things about Hartz products. I don't trust that brand. That wouldn't have anything to do with a cat getting tapeworms. Cat's get tapeworms by eating fleas.

Hi Keiko! Hartz One Spot Repellent is a great choice for combating fleas and ticks on your cat. The use of this product will not cause any sort of worm infestation.

Before treating your cat for worms, be sure to properly identify the type of worm he/she is infested with. As a reminder, if you are seeing long “spaghetti”-like worms, you are most likely seeing roundworms, which the Hartz UltraGuard RidWorm products will effectively remove from your cat. However, if you are seeing a short “rice”-like worm, you will need a different type of dewormer, as these are most likely tapeworms and Hartz UltraGuard RidWorm products will not be effective in removing these parasites. Certain treatments that work on one type of parasite may not have any effect on others. If you are unsure of what type of worm your pet may have, you may want to speak with your veterinarian about a fecal examination to better identify the parasite and treatment to remove it.

Hope this helps!
