Cats can adapt to small spaces. But remember that kittens are very active. You will need to "baby-proof" your apartment just as you would for a toddler. 2 kittens are better at entertaining each other and can wear each other out as well. If you feel your apartment is truly too small for an active, inquisitive kitten or 2, consider adopting an adult cat. These cats need homes just as much as kittens do, often moreso and can be just as loveable. When you make your choice, be sure to go to a reputable shelter or rescue. You will be asked to fill out a adoption application and asked questions about your schedule and lifestyle. The staff is not being "nosy", they want to match you with the best cat or kitten for a successful adoption. They know their cats and will be able to advise you as to the best cat/kitten for you to adopt.

I second the recommendation to get two kittens or cats to keep each other entertained- two from a litter that get along or ask a shelter for two cats that get along well that they think will suit you. Even a studio apartment is good enough for just one or two cats if there is a window and a tall cat tree.
Think carefully about the commitment you're making, though- especially if you get kittens. Cats can live for 15, 20, even 25 or more years and if you're going to keep them not only do you need to pay for food, litter, and vet bills during that time but you'll always need to find pet-friendly housing. A pair of elderly or special needs kitties may be a better choice if you don't know what your future is likely to hold 5 or 10 years down the line.
Whatever you decide, Catster is a great place to start your search. Cats listed here (like me!) are often maintained by dedicated foster parents who know their personalities really well and can help you figure out if we're a good fit!
