Here is what to do: Go to www.petfinder.com and check for rescues or shelters in your area. You can also call a local vet for one they recommend. Go to the shelter and speak with their adoption staff. Tell them how you live, how much time you will have to devote to a cat and if you have any other pets. If you rent, make sure your landlord accepts pets. You don't want to adopt or create a "fatty" cat. Fat isn't healthy for animals just like it's not healthy for us. Sign up with a vet and make sure you take the cat in once a year for an exam. Ask about food, grooming, etc. The shelter can help you through the first few days with your new cat and also advise you on which cat they think would fit the best into your life.
