Hi there, your first stop should be the vet, especially if you have children and other pets to get the kitty checked out. All you don't need is fleas!! Then if s/he is not spayed or neutered, you will need to do that as well. The cat needs healthy dry food (like Nutro), canned food as a supplement if you like, plenty of fresh water, scratchers, toys and climbing spaces. The cat must have already warmed up to you in some way. Just keep at it, and get a collar with a name tag in case s/he gets out and wants to stay out for a while! ^_^
