I have an 8 month old cat that's lived with me for 2 months. Lately, she's started to play in her litter box.
I adopted her from a shelter, and she is an only cat. As far as I know, she's never played in her litter box before, or I've never noticed her doing it. I've heard of younger kittens playing in their litter boxes, but is it normal for older kittens to start playing in them?

Yes, cats can start to do that or any other behavior we might consider to be odd at any age. One of mine who is 3 years old digs like a maniac in their box and spreads litter far and wide. Please do not reprimand her for doing it because the last thing you want to do is frighten her from using the litterbox. When you catch her doing it, try to distract her with toys so she will play with appropriate things instead.
