I have a 17 month old neutered male cat whose stool has the intense smell of moth balls.
There is no chance of ingestion of this chemical because I have none in my household and I don't know that he could survive if he had ingested mothballs. He acts healthy and has no other health issues. Is this something I should be concerned about? Has anyone ever experienced this situation? Thanks for all imput.

It's possible that he may have gotten into a different chemical substance in the house that, after passing through the body, only resembles mothballs in odor. Typically, when the feces have a distinct or strong smell, there is an underlying cause. Foul smelling feces can be indicative of intestinal parasites. Call your local vet and describe the situation. Ask to bring them a stool sample. You will need to collect the feces within 30 minutes of you cat going. You can grab it with a bag (sandwhich, grocery, etc). If you cannot get it to the vet's office right away, it will need to be refrigerated (so seal it tight!). After 24 hours, the sample is no good and you will need to obtain another. Best of luck to you both :)

As usual, Dahlia gives wonderful advice. Before you take him to the vet, do some research so that you will be able to answer their questions--is it possible that he may have gotten into a plant that, when "processed" through his system came out smelling like camphor? It's also possible that it's an infection and a course of antibiotics will solve the issue. But do, as Dahlia says, take him to the vet's. It's not normal whatevet it is.

It could be something your cat ate, it could be parasites, but it could be some systemic disease as well, so make sure that you insist on a urinalysis and full blood panel, or other appropriate tests, unless the vet comes up with a definite diagnosis without them. I've heard that diabetic humans have urine and breath odor that smells sweetish, like nail polish remover. No, that's probably not your kitty's problem, but it's an example of how some systemic diseases can make the body or excreta smell odd. Here's a site that might be helpful; it describes symptoms similar to your kitty's, and seems to think that intestinal problems may or may not be the cause. www.justanswer.com
I'm sure you could find more information if you Googled "cat smells like camphor" or something similar. Good luck and purrs.

Have you ever smelled a skunk? Are you sure you are not mistaking this odor for a skunky smell? Cats give off this skunky odor when then release the anal sacs going poopies. If you have and it's not that, my apologies. That being said, it's not supposed to blow you back on your heels. I have had this problem with my two kittens and been all over the forums and this answers page looking for the problem. If this has been going on for a while the first order of business is to check for internal parasites, even the uncommon ones. Request this with bacterial cultures as well. If all of that is negative, look into a diet change. That was what worked for my little guys.
