How to know whether to do fluids on older cat with kidney disease?
Our 12 year old cat has been diagnosed with kidney disease (stage 2). One of the vet recommendations is iv fluids 2 x daily. Our cat is a great cat but doesn't like to be held or overly bothered (happy to be petted or nearby but don't pick him up or it is a wrestling match w/lots of screeching even if it is just his nails we want to clip.) So we are struggling with the 'quailty of life" issue. The IV fluids would help him but the twice daily wrestling match will have him running and hiding from us. Anyone opt not to do the fluids?

I opted to give my cat the IV fluid therapy which prolonged her life for 14 months. I question the twice a day therapy your vet has recommended. I gave my cat 100 mL per day, along with the prescription food she prescribed made by Royal Canin. I will say that the first week or two of IV therapy is rough, but after that your cat will realize that it makes him feel better and he will get used to it. My cat would come out every evening at 7:00 p.m. (even if we had visitors) for her fluids. Cats are creatures of habit and once you get it down to a system, your cat most likely will cooperate. I wish you luck and all the best to kitty.

I have had THREE cats with CRF and they eventually get used to it - try wrapping a towel around him to keep him controled while you give him the IV fluid and after a while he will get used to it - maybe even start with taking him to the vet to due it and get ideas from them how to administer the fluids. he is STILL young and can live for quite a while with the fluids - so please find a way to administer them
