How is a cat's quality of life after it gets it's colon removed?

We have a 2 year old manx cat named Pippin who has a very hard time pooping. After many, many enemas and treatments, it's starting to look like surgery to remove the colon is our only option. My mom is convinced he will be miserable without a colon and is preparing to put him down rather than get him surgery. This obviously terrifies me. Do any of you have cats who have had their colon removed? How has their behavior changed before and after the surgery?
