How do you draw out an unsocialized but attention craving 5 y/o neutered cat?
We just got back a cat that family members had technically stolen from us, and he is so shy now. He is afraid of coming out from the bathroom. He was kept in their attic with minimal human contact and 6 unaltered males who bullied him. Now he is in our home, but is hiding. It has only been about 12 hours since we got him home so I know to give him time, but what can I do if it goes on for an extended amount of time? He wants attention, but is afraid. He may have been abused too.

It is just wonderful that you now have this young man back. The big thing he needs is to feel secure and safe. You did not say if you have other pets but if so he should be kept in his own room to get used to the new smells. Then a slow introduction. I always talk to my boys as tone shows your true feelings. Let him set the time table. It may be a few days or weeks or longer depending on how bad his prior treatment was.
Always let kitty see you reach out before petting him. My Buddy still jumps if I do not let him know I am going to touch him. Be consistent. Feed in regular pattern(I Prefer Wet only) Talk to him daily at the same time as you are able. Cats do not need as much attention as a dog but if you give him small bits of regular attention you will be amazed. Cats are very resilient.
My Buddy took a bit of time but it was worth the effort. If you like please read about this "Isolationist"! He is now one of Da Boyz!

Poor little guy! I can't imagine what kind of people they must be to treat animals that way. How wonderful that you got him back! There really isn't much you can do except to give him time. Keep things quiet and keep visits from strangers to a minimum. If people are coming over, close him in a safe room with his food, water and litterbox. Speak softly around him and never force attention on him. Let him come to you. One thing my sister was told to do with the feral kittens she adopted was to feed them and then sit with the food so they would get used to her. So she would take her coffee and newpaper and sit on the floor with their dishes while they came to eat. Show him all the love you can but on his terms and be patient.
