How do I teach my kitten the difference between toys and holiday decorations?

I am big on decorating for the holidays beginning in October. Having just acquired our kitten we are unsure of what to do about our decorations. Any advice?

I have had to cut WAY back on my decorating. Right now I have some fall stuff on the dining room table and the leaf clusters are on the floor every time I go in there. My Christmas Tree is artificial and I use mostly plastic ornaments. At least 1 kitty is sure to climb the tree so even the higher branches are risky for any glass heirlooms. All you can do is discourage Skitty when you catch her messing with the decorations and redirect her to the toys she is allowed to play with. And be sure that you think of her safety first and that none of your decorations can be swallowed or are poisonous to cats because she WILL get into them especially while she is a kitten. No chemicals in Christmas tree water, no live pointsettias or Easter lillies, no tinsel that can be swallowed and cut her little intestines up. Everything is a toy when you are a kitten and everything must be tasted when you are a kitten.

When you figure it out, be sure to let me know!!! I got Smokey the first of December last year. He totally trashed the tree the first week!!! I finally took it down and put it away.
When I have a puppy I just put an expen around the tree and it works great. Doesn't faze the cat at all, he just hops over it.
I will be watching this for any helpful hints!!!
