We couldn't put down a days worth of food at once because they'd eat it all in ten minutes. One cat passed away and the other was alone for six months but still got her three meals a day. Now we have a 14 week old kitten who was raised with food always there and he nibbles when he feels ready for it. He eats most of it at night. We just recently let him out of his safe room but don't know how to put food down for both. The older cat will just pig out on his baby cat food and get more overweight (we've been trying to help her shed a few pounds recently) while the kitten is probably going to starve. What do we do?? When Izzie was a kitten, his late brother, Ernie would also eat Izzie's kitten food. Izzie didn't starve and Ernie didn't get fat, but I understand your concerns. Short of yelling yourself hoarse at the female to leave the kitten food alone, there isn't much you can do except put Jr. in a room by himself to eat. Leave him to it for about 1/2 hour and then go back in, pick up the food and let him out. You might try mixing it with some wet food to make it more enticing to him to eat right away.
