Be aware that cats who are given up because they are not litter-trained is almost a certain death sentence in any shelter. They are considered pretty much unadoptable. Cats stop using the litter box for a few reasons. One is stress, another is habit. If their litter boxes are not kept very clean (you may need to scoop more than once a day) some cats will resort to using the floor. Wherever they mess needs to be cleaned up with an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle (pet stores). Make sure they like their litter and the boxes are in a private area. Some cats don't like covered boxes. Is there too much litter in their box? Cats only need about an inch. Make sure they are in good health. Impacted anal glands (glands on either side of their anus) can be very painful whenever the cat poops. Watch your cats and when you see them start to go outside the box, pick them up and put them in the box. Don't punish them. They aren't doing it to anger you.
