Actually, a 5 week old kitten should still be nursing occasionally. However, it that's not possible, you can begin to feed her 1/2 wet and 1/2 dry food moistened with KMR (kitten milk replacement avail. at pet stores). When we've started kittens on regular food, we tried feeding them off our fingers, close to the bowl. You can free feed her at this age. She won't overeat. But, if you make the mixture of KMR/wet food/dry food, don't leave it down for more than a half hour as it starts to get "funky" after a while and you don' want her to get sick. A "good" food is anything that a kitten/cat will eat enthusiastically, is healthy and happy. Also, if you have not taken your cat to a vet yet, it's time.

Feed her 3 small meals a day. No iams isn't that good. it has too much of the stuff cats don't need like corn. Plus the animals they test on are neglected.

Raw is the best thing you can give your cat but many people are squemish or don't have the time so canned is the next best thing. It has the protein and meat that cats need. Dry food is too carbohydrate dense to keep cats fully healthy. Feed canned cat foods with at least 3 meat sources within the first 4 ingredients. The best canned foods include EVO,innova,Chicken soup,Evangers,Wellness,Newmans own,Merrick,Felidae,Sheba, tiki, and the cheapest of the goods, trader joes canned food.

If money is tight for you, canned meow mix, fancy feast, pro plan, and 9 lives. And you'lle still be doing better than you would be if you were feeding dry like purina or even a good dry like innova.
