First indoor cat - tags

This is my first indoor cat, and I have his rabies and (ugly) microchip tags. Should he be wearing these? Seems like a nuisance for him.

My cats are indoor only cats and they do not wear their tags. I keep the rabies tag with the certificate in a file where it can easily be accessed if anybody ever questioned me about their vaccines. Collars really just mess up their hair and cause mats around their necks because they have long hair.
