Ear mites: do they just get them from contact with the cat who has them? Answers at Dogster Answers.

Kira had mites (assuming she had them when I got her) and she was treated with MilbeMite twice and cured in early October. Now Chelsea has them and the vet treated her today. She wasn't itchy or shaking her head. I only took her in as a precaution to make sure the dirty ear was not mites but it WAS. Can the mites be spread on surfaces like bedding or is it just from contact with the affected cat? They are all adults except Kira so I didn't expect anybody else to get them. Shouldn't they be immune? So far Allie and Bailey are fine. Bailey was checked in October and Allie has very clean ears and mostly keeps to herself so she doesn't have direct contact with her sisters. The others cuddle and wash each other, but not her.

Ear mites are "contagious" and are spread by close contact (playing or eating or sleeping) with the infested animal. Somewhere along the line your cats were close enough for the mites to hitch a ride. There is no immunity, just like there is no way to be immune to fleas. You'll have to be very watchful of all your kitties' ears now.
