I am a former ARW as well and I can attest to the fact that our organization and all the other rescues we knew of did not adopt out black cats (or even dogs) from October 1 thru Nov. 1. If you visit a place at this time of year that adopts out kitties and you notice any black cats being offered, it's perfectly OK to raise hell with the staff. Been there, done that, got the police report.

Milkshake, the reason for this is because some cruel and cold-hearted people kill black cats because they are superstitious and what not. I agree, black cats or even grey cats should NOT be allowed outdoors during this time or adopted, just to be on the safe side. None of us want poor little kitties to die just because they were born with black fur. That's not their fault and black cats are adorable. My fiance and I plan on adopting a black cat when we get our house.

It doesn't have to be solid black either. My aunt had a dark colored torti who was allowed outside and on halloween a cruel teen shot her because she looked black in the dark.

Safest bet is to just NOT let kitties out at night (or, NOT AT ALL EVER. Cats really belong indoors.) around halloween.
