Does anyone know anything about the quality of Trader Joe's brand canned cat food?

My vet recommended an all-canned-food diet for my cat to lose weight. He suggested some expensive brands (Newman's Own, Natural Balance) that list meat as the first 3 or 4 ingredients. However, we are on a budget, and Trader Joe's (59 cents per can) brand lists the top 3 or 4 ingredients as meat, so I'm considering going with that instead. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are as many opinions about cat food as there are members on Catster. Many people will tell you that you should aim for a canned food that is grain-free. I'm not that fussy myself. If the food provides the nutrients a cat needs and is palatable to the cat (or, perhaps, in the case of an overweight cat, NOT so palatable), I would go for it. Regarding Trader Joe's, I don't live in the States so can't help you there--hope someone else can. Although there are as many theories about dieting (both feline and human) as there are about cat food, I go with the school that says counting calories is the key to losing weight. With your vet, set up a target weight, decide the schedule (slow), and calculate the number of calories Star needs to eat per day to attain that weight--using a nutritious food, of course. Helping a cat lose weight is hard, and I wish you luck.

My cats all love the Trader Joes food and do great on it. The ingredients are as good as most of the expensive canned foods and they've never had any quality issues.

Sweet Pea AKA Ma-Ma

I'm a (or should be) smaller framed spayed kitty who should weigh about 8 lbs. But instead I'm a dry food chow hound & weigh 13 lbs. My Mom stopped the free feeding of dry food & I got around that by tearing a hole in huge bag of dry food. That bag kept out of sight, my free feed went on. I know am on a timed wet food diet of Trader Joes cat food, with an occasional dry nibble of kibble. I am losing weight (slowly) and should be at my ideal weight in 1+ yr. My favorites in order are: Tuna (given on Holidays), chicken, salmon, and turkey. My Mom thinks TJ's is the best quality canned cat food available without going broke! Good luck shedding those pounds!
