Clarification.

No, I was not being careless leaving the spaghetti sauce out. The phone rang, I answered it, and two minutes later came back to find all my cats attempting to lick the plate. I make a point of eating all my meals in restaurants to avoid this. That day was an exception. The reason I mentioned euthanasia is because I've learned from Catster that you can't trust vets. Euthanasia is rarely performed in Japan because of Buddhist precepts. Americans seem to be keen on euthanasia as a way to end or forestall suffering. I feel guilty because all my cats have, so far, simply died of old age. I feel pressured by Catster to euthanize any animal who has any possibility of being in distress.

Wow! No, I would not euthanize your cats if they are doing fine! Euthanasia is a very difficult and highly personal decision. Some people just cannot bring themselves to do it. Others feel strongly that animals should be euthanized before they have to suffer at all. This is a decision only you can make. Please don't feel pressured to do anything you are not okay with. I feel lucky in that I DO trust my vets and feel I can talk to them about what is best for my cats.

I'm not sure who on catster told you to euthanize your cats but eating some spagetti sauce shouldn't be an issue as long as they just ate a small amount. The issue with spagetti sauce is that it has garlic and onions in it but just licking a small amount shouldn't hurt them. If you don't trust the vets take one cat who ate some of the sauce and ask him to do a blood test/complete blood count (CBC) and make sure to get a copy. Check for signs of anemia (low HCT/heamatocrit) and comments about Heinz bodies (damaged red blood cells). If you see that quiz the vet and ask if it could be from what they ate. If they just have a mild case they will recover fine on their own. I think they'd be showing serious symptoms already if they were in danger.

There's absolutely no reason to euthanize your cats if they've been checked out by the vets and they're okay. There's no reason to end their lives short because someone is trying to pressure you into euthanasia on healthy animals.
Love your kitties and I would watch leaving out the food. (:

Take care and best of luck to you.
