It won't hurt if the cat litter and their food is in the same room. Just keep them somewhat spaced away from each other. Cats do not like their litterbox near their food. If the cats are indoor cats, they do not pick up the same parasites that outdoor cats do. Outdoor cats can pick up nasty parasites in contaminated soil (toxoplasmosis is one). If the cats go outside, then this is a worry for any pregnant woman. If they are indoors, I wouldn't worry about it.

RJ is right. For a long time, my cats also had their food and water in the same room as their litter boxes. There were no issues. However, since your neice is pregnant, she should not be cleaning the litter boxes. Cat feces can carry a parasite that could make your neice sick.

Don't worry, it's not harmful at all. It is safe, my cat's food is in the same room as the litter box and they are very healthy. As long as they don't get litter in the food, it is fine. Make sure it is far enough that none can get in the food. Hope this helps!
