Yes, you can leave dry food in the dish for your kitten to free feed. Kittens can not really be overfed because they are growing and developing and they need ll of the nutrition they can get. Do not leave canned food in the dish sitting out for more than 30 minutes though. It will spoil. Many people feel that a wet diet is best but I feed Wellness dry cat food and kitten food to mine. Mine get canned a couple of times a week as a treat.

canned is ushually better as it has more protein, although there are exceptions to the rule like EVO,Natures Variety instinct, and Wellness CORE. .

Yes, you can leave food in the dish. My cats have their different schedule to eat. I measure how much I should feed daily and leave in their bowls. If the food is gone before next feeding time, most time I just add a little bit. Regarding food, dry hard food is better for cat's teeth. But if your kitty never have a soft canned food, it will be good idea to feed him a little bit of soft canned food (just for a while, till your kitten turns into one year old) and mainly dry food.

Hope this helps.
