What's the best way to teach 2 grown cats to use the toilet instead of a litter box? Gadgets and gizmos that can be purchased for this purpose are not available where I live.

Well, I don't know where you live, but there is usually an Internet shopping option. I'd advise you to surf the Internet for information on toilet-training gadgets and methods. You can also use the Catster search engine for advice. There have been animal trainers on Catster who have said that it's relatively simple (but don't teach them to flush--they'll get obsessed with it). Have fun!!!

I didn't feel like spending money on those gadgets so I found stuff around the house to work with. Vin isn't potty trained yet, but he's close. Here's what I've done, just keep in mind I know my cat takes to things quickly.
Day1: Litter box on top of a box near the toilet. I also had a small pan filled with flush-able litter recessed in the toilet bowl where he could see/smell it.
Day2: Took away his box and he was using the pan in the toilet.
Day3: Put a sturdy piece of cardboard between the seat and the pan with a small hole so he could scratch the litter in the pan. Hopefully this trains them to aim for the hole.
Day4: Took away the pan and only put a bit of litter on the rim of the cardboard. (Many, if not most cats can take weeks or even months to reach this point.Expect to move slower to accommodate both cats' comfort levels)
Now I'm just gradually increasing the size of the hole until he no longer needs the cardboard. And with just a bit of luck he will be potty trained
