There could be a number of reasons why your mom's cat has turned into Rambo. Izzie has hunted "bed mice" (hands/feet under the blankets) all his life. And he's not kidding. He bites and claws until he gets the idea that I'm really getting annoyed and he's in danger of spending the night shut out of the bedroom, then he settles down. There could also be a stray cat outside that her cat sees and since it can't get to the cat,he's attacking her. He could be bored. In any case, whenever there is a sudden change in behavior, the first course of action is to at least phone the vet. If he hasn't been in a while, he needs to go in just to make sure there are no health issues. They can also advise your mom on what tactics work best to convince him that attacking mom is not such a wonderful idea.
