4 yr old male cat is throwing up about once a week now, maybe more... HELP!!

Tesoro (my 4 yr old male cat) has just recently begun throwing up A LOT, it seems like once a week, maybe more. He is coughing/strange noises/gagging (?) (hairball, maybe?) prior to vomiting, when I've actually seen him do it. The vomit itself is fairly solid/squishy dry cat food in a "feces-formation", sometimes it seems it may BE feces! Is that possible?! (other times it's just vomit, for sure) I'M SO BAFFLED! Does anyone know what this could be? Maybe just throwing up hairballs? (Already tried switching food) I'm concerned because additionally I have to move to another state next month&don't know how he'll possibly make it! ANY HELP WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED... P.S. If this is relevant- he has long black hair and a lot of it, possible culprit?

If this is really recent and there is times when it's food and not a hairball, I would see the vet about it. He may have some kind of intestinal blockage. But based on the fact that he has long black hair, it could just be hairballs but there is usally not food involved in hairball barf. Hairballs do look a lot like poop but Allie's are usually surrounded by a little puddle of wet barf so too so you know it's not poop. I had read that a fiber content of 5% or more in the food was best for long haired cats and I have seen a huge improvement with the Wellness Indoor formula. Allie was doing them several times a week and now it has been a while since I have seen one. Frequent brushing will help also. For some reason Allie just grooms herself a lot more than my others and she hates the comb so she is the only one who had a problem.
