Spaying females and neutering males dramatically reduces the number of animals with no loving home and actually decreases the risk of many serious diseases.
What is spaying? The surgical removal of the female reproductive organs. It eliminates behaviors associated with the heat cycle, like kneading, howling and restlessness. It also greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
What is neutering? The surgical removal of parts of the male reproductive organs. It prevents spraying, roaming and catfights over females and territory. The urine of a neutered cat is also less smelly.
Check with the animal shelter. When you adopt from an animal shelter, your cat has most likely been spayed or neutered. If you’re not sure, asked whether the procedure has been performed.
Get it done. If it hasn’t been performed, consult with your local vet right away.
