Yes, you can have a cats and nice furniture, too.

Some cats like to scratch upright, preferring walls, door moldings and the backs of chairs and sofas. Some cats prefer scratching low—they like carpets, chair cushions and other flat surfaces. Some cats do both.

It’s perfectly normal. Cats scratch to stretch and condition their body, toes and claws, mark territory and express their feelings and emotions. Plus, it feels good.

Protect your stuff. Apply one of the commercial products that prevent scratching to the area.

Scratching post. Make one or buy it, then sprinkle it with catnip and place it near the area he is scratching. You can make a post with wood and carpet remnants.

Praise good behavior. When he scratches his stuff (instead of yours) praise and reward him.
